BURNAWAY is an Atlanta-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing critical coverage and dialogue about arts in Atlanta and the Southeast since 2008. BURNAWAY fulfills its mission through the online arts publication, critics-in-residency program, writing workshops, annual print publication, and public programs.
BURNAWAY's mission is to champion Atlanta as a vibrant community; to inspire and educate the public; to interpret the contemporary significance of art regionally, nationally, an internationally; and to elevate discourse about the arts while opening the conversation to new audiences.
Since its inception BURNAWAY has been dedicated to fostering a culture of critical dialogue surrounding the visual arts in Atlanta. BURNAWAY recognizes the importance that writers and thinkers play in supporting artist communities to promote, challenge, and propel them forward. The editorial and programmatic content of the organization strives to provide coverage that reflects the geographic, demographic, and artistic diversity of the region.
BURNAWAY was founded in response to a strong community need for renewed arts criticism in Atlanta. Planning for the new publication began in the summer of 2008, and BURNAWAY’s website officially debuted in October of that year. BURNAWAY’s mission is to champion Atlanta as a vibrant creative community, to inspire and educate the public, to interpret the contemporary significance of art regionally, nationally, and internationally, and to elevate discourse about the arts while opening the conversation to new audiences. Through weekly reviews, columns, interviews, and podcasts, BURNAWAY attempts to respond to the famous challenge issued by William Faulkner: “So vast, so limitless in capacity is man’s imagination to disperse and burn away the rubble-dross of fact and probability, leaving only truth and dream.” (Requiem for a Nun, 1951) To “disperse and burn away”—a statement about the nature of creativity that compels us to look beyond what merely is and envision what could be.
